Drake Shannon was partners with "Crash" Simpson in his  Daredevil Cycle Show.  When they two had a disagreement about the direction of the show, they decided to wage a cross-country race to determine the final owner.  Shannon attempted to cheat by swerving into Simpson, but instead of Simpson losing, Shannon crashed and his face was horribly disfigured. Supplied with a hypnotic eyeball-shaped helmet and a laser pistol by the group known as They Who Wield Power, Shannon became the menacing Orb.
