| Origin | |
| The
daughter of Kanji Oyama, the criminal known as Lord Dark Wind, Yuriko
Oyama and her two brothers were physically scarred by their father. The elder Oyama, a kamikaze pilot during World War II, survived his suicidal assault on an American battleship, failing to destroy the ship. Ashamed by his survival, and his facial scars caused by the plane crash, Oyama likewise ceremonially scarred the faces of his children as a symbol of his shame. An accomplished scientist Oyama developed a means for bonding the virtually, indestructible steel alloy Adamantium to human bone, a process with which he hoped to create an army of superhuman soldiers for Japan. His research notes stolen, it took Oyama years to rediscover the process. Using his process of bonding Adamantium to bone, Oyama augmented the broken bones of the assassin Bullseye, which had been shattered in a battle with the crimefighter Daredevil. In exchange, Oyama desired for Bullseye to assassinate Japan’s minister of trade. Pursuing the assassin, Daredevil encountered Yuriko Oyama, who sought vengeance on her father, both for scarring her and for the deaths of her brothers. In conflict for her desire of vengeance, Oyama loved one of Dark Wind’s soldiers named Kira, and did not want her father to cause him harm. Guiding Daredevil to her father’s private island, Bullseye escaped, and Yuriko slew her father just as he was about to kill Daredevil. Oyama's love, Kira, soon after committed suicide in despair over his master's death. The shock of Kira’s death radically altered Oyama's perspective and she began to adopt her late father’s evil tactics. Convinced the mutant Wolverine had gained his Adamantium skeleton by the process stolen from her father, Oyama garbed herself as a samurai, calling herself Lady Deathstrike. Leading her late father’s warriors to Canada she confronted and attempted to kill Wolverine, but was herself defeated by the Alpha Flight member Vindicator. Following her humiliating defeat, Oyama underwent a process transforming her into a cyborg. She soon after joined with other cyborgs known as the Reavers, to continue her quest for vengeance as the ultra-lethal Lady Deathstrike. |
