| Origin | |
| Mercenary
Jason Macendale began his career in the Marines and later the CIA, but
defected to a foreign military power, an act which resulted in his
American citizenship being revoked. Wanting notoriety as a mercenary, he assumed the identity of the costumed criminal Jack O'Lantern After Macendale abandoned the Jack O'Lantern identity to become the Hobgoblin, another mercenary took up the identity; Steven Mark Levins obtained Macendale's equipment and made considerable upgrades in offensive and tactical capabilities. Initially allying himself with the Red Skull against Captain America, Levins has established himself as a formidable costumed criminal battling primarily Spider-Man. In unrelated events, Maguire Beck, the younger cousin and criminal partner of Quentin Beck (Mysterio I) sought revenge against those she believed lead to her cousin's suicide. For years Maguire Beck worked behind the scenes designing effects for her older cousin's flamboyant criminal career. In those times when Quentin Beck was incarcerated he also had another protégé, Daniel Berkhart, who also used the identity of Mysterio in the employee of Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson in his vendetta against Spider-Man. When Berkhart was once again incarcerated he held a grudge against Jameson and after gaining freedom teamed with Maguire Beck to seek revenge as the seemingly mystical Mad Jack. |
