| Origin | |
| The
son of the Nazi scientist
Baron Heinrich Zemo, Helmut Zemo blamed his
father's greatest enemy
Captain
America for his death. In truth the
elder Zemo was crushed under a rockslide triggered by his integrator gun,
when he attempted to kill the hero at his South American compound. Seeking revenge using his father's inventions Helmut took the disguise as Phoenix I, captured Captain America and his then-partner the Falcon and devised a plot to immerse them in a vat of boiling Adhesive X. Captain America escaped and when grappling with Zemo he toppled into his own trap. Believed dead Zemo escaped through a drain pipe at the bottom of the cauldron, but not before his face was severely scared by the boiling adhesive, as his father had been by the same invention, battling Captain America during World War II. Zemo would go underground striking at his enemy through others, until he resurfaced adopting his father's costume and his title as Baron Zemo. He would join forces with the Red Skull to plague Captain America, and his allies in the Avengers leading a new Masters of Evil. After the assault of Onslaught, when many of Earth's heroes were presumed dead, Zemo would form another group known as the Thunderbolts, disguising himself as the heir to the legacy of Citizen V. The ruse exposed he reclaimed his hereditary title as Baron Zemo. |
