Note: One account of Annihilus' true nature is that of a colony of small insect-like beings inhabiting the Annihilus armor. This account was exposed as a ruse by the true Annihilus in order to mislead his adversaries.
Another account of Annihilus' true nature is that of a single diminutive creature resembling his armor. This account appears to be true and therefore Annihilus' size and abilities are actually that of an exo-skeletal armor.
Cosmic Control Rod: Cylindrical device enabling the possessor to control a vast amount of cosmic energy to either reconfigure atomic structures or project powerful explosive beams of energy. Exposure to the cosmic energies greatly retards and possibly stops the aging process, therefore rendering the possessor immortal.
Note: The cosmic rod as well as other devices and weapons used by Annihilus are derived from the the technology of the Tyanna, an alien species indigenous to the Negative Zone dimension.

One of the ships crashed upon the barren volcanic planet Arthros, and the dying voyagers released their cargo of spores as a final act.
From the mass of spores, one evolved into an insectoid being possessing intelligence. Discovering the Tyanna starship this creature would learn its creator's civilization and technology from a knowledge transference helmet. Using this knowledge, the creature adapted the ships technology into weapons and devices, including the Comic Control Rod from which it gained unlimited power and immortality, to dominate the other lifeforms evolving on the planet. In time the creature would direct its desire to conquer other planets within the Negative Zone; becoming the life-stealing scourge known as Annihilus.
