| Captain Marvel Jr. #4 (Feb. 1943) | |
| Creator | |
| Otto Binder & Al Careno | |
| Origin | |
| Timothy Karnes, the foster
brother of Freddy Freeman (Captain
Marvel Jr.) studied black magic to gain power. Succeeding beyond
his wildest dreams Karnes summoned the spirits of six demons. In a
blasphemous parody of
Captain Marvel's powers the devils gave him the unique ability to
transform into a living demon by uttering the word
Sabbac. Eventually imprisoned in Iron Heights, Karnes larynx was removed to insure that he could not call upon his demonic powers. Transferred to the Antarctic metahuman prison known as the Slab, he along with over a thousand other superhuman prisoners escaped when the Outsiders confronted Brother Blood, who was attempting to use the prison as an operations base for world domination. Recruited by Russian mobster Ishmael Gregor, Karnes who was unable to speak the mystic word, was put through a series of dark-magic ceremonies culminating in his unwitting death, transforming the mafia leader into an even deadlier Sabbac. |
