Origin
Raised by an alcoholic father, Martyn Van Wyck grew into a bitter young man who was constantly in trouble and unable to hold down a job.

Dumped on a country road after an argument with a female acquaintance, Van Wyck was abducted by the alien Controllers.

Found a week later, naked and disoriented, Van Wyck was taken to a hospital where the doctors were unable to find anything wrong with him other that his eyes flickered like flame.

After an altercation with a Seattle merchant, Van Wyck lashed out in anger creating a beast of flame.  Deciding to use his new found abilities for profit he assumed the identity of Effigy.
