After more than three decades, Bane was made the subject of experiments of a highly addictive, gene-altering drug called Venom, capable of giving its user tremendous strength in exchange for sanity.

Escaping from Pena Duro, he made for Gotham City, temporarily disabling Batman and taking over the Gotham underworld, proving the merits of his name, Bane.
