| Origin | |
| Capable
of traversing space, time, and other dimensions, the Elder of the Universe
obsessed with games of chance known as the
Grandmaster staged a contest of
champions with the time traveling
Scarlet Centurion. The
Grandmaster recruited the
Squadron Supreme as pawns for
his games, while the Scarlet Centurion assembled several of the Squadron's
enemies into the Institute of Evil. Besting the Scarlet Centurion’s
champions the Grandmaster decided to create a team similar to the Squadron
Supreme. Returning to his native universe the Grandmaster transformed three Earthmen into counterparts of the Squadron Supreme members: Nighthawk, Dr. Spectrum, and the Whizzer. The Grandmaster also fashioned a powerhouse mimicking the abilities and appearance of Hyperion from extra-dimensional matter; imbuing him with artificial memories. The Grandmaster then traveled forward into time with his team to challenge Kang the Conqueror and his unwilling champions the Avengers as the Squadron Sinister. |
