Origin
Late in the 20th Century of an alternate reality, astronaut Vance Astro was to be the first human to travel on an interstellar mission.  Traveling in the Odysseus I, a sub-light-speed spaceship, Astro had to be kept in a state of suspended animation to make the journey to a planet in the Alpha Centauri system - which would take 1000 years.

To protect Astro from aging his skin was coated in a copper-adamantium alloy body-suit and his blood transfused with a preservative.  Over the ensuing millennium Astro developed latent psychokinetic abilities.

Arriving at Centauri IV, Astro discovered that humans had developed light-speed technology and arrived about 200 years before him.  Undeterred, Astro resolved to complete his mission and while making a geographic survey he met a primitive hunter named Yondu Udonta.  When the Brotherhood of Badoon attacked the human colony of Centauri IV, Astro and Yondu attempted an escape, but were captured by the alien marauders.

When the Badoon set their sights upon Earth the two heroes were transported to Earth's solar system.  Escaping their captors, Astro and Yondu recruited heroes who lived on other once-uninhabited planets within Earth's solar system forming the Guardians of the Galaxy.

When Annihilus, the ruler of the Negative Zone, saw the expansion of the positive matter universe into his own as an invasion, he struck back - eradicating the intergalactic Nova Corps and brining the Kree, Skrull and Xandar Empires to their knees.

In the wake of the stalemate with the Annihilation Wave, a new threat surfaced.  The techno-organic race known as the Phalanx, under the command of the sentient robot Ultron, sealed off and took control of the Kree Empire - converting the inhabitants into mindless drones.

To counter the threat of the Phalanx, Kree freedom fighters recruited an unusual group of heroes lead by Star-Lord to infiltrate the Phalanx base on the Kree imperial planet Hala - and destroy the invaders from within.

After Ultron was defeated the band of heroes were united by Star-Lord to serve and protect as the Guardians of the Galaxy.
