from an ancient line of African priestesses, with the potential to wield
magic, Ororo Monroe was born in Manhattan after her mother, the princess
of a tribe in Kenya, married an American photojournalist and moved with
him to the United States. At age six months, she and her parents relocated to Cairo, Egypt. Five years later, a bomb destroyed their home killing her parents, but she survived, buried under rubble near her mother's body. This trauma resulted in Ororo suffering from severe claustrophobia. Homeless and orphaned, she came under the tutelage of master thief Achmed el-Gibar becoming his prize pupil. As a teen she felt a strong urge to head south. Journeying alone across the Sahara Desert she finally reached her ancestral homeland in the Serengeti Plain, straddling the modern nations of Kenya and Tanzania. Her mutant ability to manipulate weather had began to emerge and she used it to create rains for the local tribes, who worshipped her as a deity. She played goddess for several years until Professor Charles Xavier recruited her for a rescue mission of the original X-Men from the island-being known as Krakoa. Becoming a permanent member of the X-Men, she grew into a strong team leader as the weather witch Storm. |
