Origin
After assisting Black Bolt of the Inhumans, Prince Jason of Spartoi was accused of betraying the alliance between the Spartoi and Shi'ar empires.  Going into exile deep into space, Prince Jason was eventually recalled to by his father; but his ship converter blew and apparently slipped backward in time to Colorado of the early 1960's.  Found in the mountains and nursed to health by Meredith Quill, Prince Jason fell in love with the Earth woman and they conceived a child.  Eventually departing back to the Spartoi Empire, Prince Jason mindlocked Quill to prevent her from remembering him and suffering heartbreak.

In the decade that passed, Meredith Quill's son Peter dreamed of space and becoming and astronaut.  It wasn't until his mother's death at the hands of his father's rivals that Peter Quill resolved that a destiny in space was his only means of vengeance.  Accepted by NASA into the astronaut program and though a series of events which brought him into the presence of the celestial Master of the Sun, Quill was transformed into the Star-Lord.
