Origin
Mattie Franklin, a fifteen-year-old girl, took her father's place at an arcane ceremony called the Gathering of Five, presided over by financier Norman Osborne (Green Goblin I).  The chances of the ceremony were that the participants would be granted one of five gifts: wisdom, immortality, power, madness or death.  Franklin was fortunate and acquired the gift of infinite power.

Franklin used her new powers to assume the identity of her idol, the amazing Spider-Man, in his absence.  When he returned, she took another related identity that of the newest Spider-Woman.

Mattie's crime-fighting career would bring her into conflict with a villain also claiming the name Spider-Woman, who was being controlled by Dr. Octopus.  This conflict would lead to Franklin acquiring the powers of the three previous Spider-Women, and another participant in the Gathering of Five, the psychic Madame Web.
