| Origin | |
| The
twin brother of Wanda
Maximoff (Scarlet Witch), and unknown to
him and his sister until adulthood the offspring of Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto),
Pietro Maximoff was born into a strange life. After manifesting his mutant abilities, the gypsy woman Magda fled in fear from her husband Erik. The newly pregnant woman took refuge in the High Evolutionary's scientific citadel of Wundagore in the Balkan mountains of the small nation of Transia. There she was cared for by Bova, a woman evolved from a female cow by the High Evolutionary. After Magda gave birth to twins she secreted away in the night to leave the children in Bova's care. Days after the twins' birth Wundagore would be visited by Robert and Madeline Frank (Whizzer I & Miss America), who were seeking help with the delivery of their child. Bova intended to present the twins after their child was born, but the child and Madeline Frank died from complications. Bova still presented the twins to Robert Frank as his biological children in a hopes of assuaging his grief over the loss of his wife. Frank's grief was still too fresh and he was unable to accept the children. Desperate to give the children human parents, Bova presented them to her master the High Evolutionary, who in turn left them in the care of a gypsy couple camped nearby, Django and Marya Maximoff, who had lost their own twin children during a war. The twins matured believing that the Maximoffs were their biological parents, and after a time so did Django Maximoff. When they reached adolescence Pietro and Wanda developed peculiar talents. After being separated from their adoptive parents the twins wandered Europe. When they were threatened by local villagers they were rescued by Magneto who recognizing their gifts as mutations and recruited them into his Brotherhood of Mutants, as the Scarlet Witch and the Quicksilver. The twins would serve Magneto out of both a sense of obligation and fear. When Magneto was defeated by the extraterrestrial Stranger the twins would petition for membership in the Avengers where they have both served long and heroic careers. |
