In an alternate reality the menace posed by the Phoenix-force was neutralized without the apparent suicide of Jean Grey (Phoenix II).  She and Scott Summers (Cyclops) married and had a daughter named Rachael.

After the assassination of Senator Robert Kelley, mutant hysteria lead to the election of a president with an anti-mutant agenda.  Unleashing the Sentinels the United States became subject to marshal law by the mutant hunting robots.

After the destruction of the Xavier Institute, Summers was imprisoned in a concentration camp and forced through powerful psychotropic drugs to use her psionic abilities to hunt and kill other mutants.

Eventually Summers used her psionic abilities to access the Phoenix-force as her mother had.  She fled into the past in an attempt to alter her bleak future using the powers of the Phoenix.
