The second of two children born to a physician and his wife, Johnny Storm grew up comfortably on Long Island. In high school, he developed an attraction to fast cars and beautiful girls. A visit to his sister Sue (Invisible Girl) in California would forever shattered Johnny's small-town status quo, and offer him the opportunity to experience the ultimate thrill ride. Sue's fiancé and longtime sweetheart, aeronautical engineer Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), had designed and fabricated an experimental starship capable of interstellar travel. Threatened by the U.S. government with cancellation of the partial funding of Richards' project, he chose to make an immediate test flight with Air Force pilot Ben Grimm (Thing II) as the chief astronaut. Rounding out the crew of four were Storm and his older sister. A freak cosmic-radiation storm changed the rocket's inhabitants granting them each unique powers. When the rocket crashed back to Earth, young Johnny Storm was engulfed in flames when exposed to the atmosphere, becoming a Human Torch. |
