Phineas T. Horton, a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence, created a synthesoid capable of mimicking all the functions of a human being, including independent thought.  The only flaw in Dr. Horton's design was that the power supply of photoelectric solar cells covering the android's body were too volatile and caused the epidermis to burst into flame upon contact with air.

At the android's public unveiling Horton demonstrated how it would burst into flame when exposed to the air within a transparent container.  Decried by the press as a menace, Horton was forced to bury his invention within the container under concrete until he could figure a way to resolve the android's uncontrollable flame.

During its time of isolation, Horton insured his invention would acquire mental stimulation through a radio receiver, which both educating and entertaining the android.  Eventually a flaw in the container's seal allowed enough oxygen to breach and the android burst violently into flame.  Escaping the concrete tomb, he wandered the streets until extinguishing himself in a neighborhood swimming pool.   With time the android would learn to control not only his own flame, but flames of all sources and even heat itself, becoming not a menace but the hero known as the Human Torch.
