| Origin | |
| Along
with his father Charley Burlingame became a member
of a separatist group known as the Imperial Forces of America. Genetically altered, Burlingame became a coal powered monster capable of taking on any property of carbon. He was enlisted into the shock troops which abducted innocent citizens to work as slave labor or as test subjects for genetic experiments. After his defeat at the hands of the Thunderbolts, Burlingame went into hiding. Witnessing a television interview with Thunderbolt's new team leader Hawkeye after Abe Jenkins (MACH-1) surrendered to authorities for a murder he committed as the Beetle, Burlingame tracked the Thunderbolt's back to their mountain cabin hideout to seek redemption and to join them as Charcoal: The Burning Man. |
