Kentucky coal miner, Sam Guthrie's mutant power first manifest itself when
he and his fellow workers were trapped by a cave-in. Recruited by the Hellfire Club he was sent into battle against Professor Xavier's new class known as the New Mutants. During their battle, Guthrie refused to kill and was in turn threatened with death by his team leader. Rescued by Xavier, he recognized that the young mutant was not evil, just misguided and offered him membership in the group. Adopting a codename indicative of his rocketing powers he became known as Cannonball. |
