| Origin | |
| A frail man, Ted Grant's
father insured that his son would not be as frail as he and had him trained in a variety of
sports from childhood, especially boxing. Grant went on to study
medicine in college and was on boxing team. He
was forced to leave college and look for work when his father died leaving
him with a huge financial debt. Wandering the streets one night Grant witnessed boxing legend "Socker" Smith being assaulted by two muggers. Because he helped Smith overcome the attackers, Smith offered to take Grant under his wing and train him as a boxer. In the following months, Grant became a contender for the heavy-weight championship, but he had to fight Smith. During the fight, Grant unwittingly killed his mentor in a fixed boxing bout. Unknown to both fighters their managers, Flint and Skinner, placed a needle laced with a powerful sedative in Grant's boxing glove. Grant was arrested for murder, but Flint and Skinner feared that he knew too much and arranged an accident. On the way to the local police station, the police car veered off an embankment, killing both officers and presumably Grant. Surviving the tragic accident he became a fugitive from justice. Inspired by the mystery-man Green Lantern, Grant took on secret identity, vowing to clear his name. After bringing Flint and Skinner to justice he continues his fight as Wildcat. |
