Aquaman, Tempest has
two different origins, one stemming from the silver-age and modern-age of
comics. In the silver-age, Aquaman, an exile himself, adopted a young Atlantian that had been exiled because of his phobia of fish, apparently a condition that made him an anomaly amongst under-sea dwellers. The boy was gradually taught to trust the creatures of the sea allowing him to live a normal life. The two joined in many adventures both above and below the ocean's surface. Their surface world adventures brought him notoriety in the press, that dubbed him Aqualad. The modern-age origin tells of Garth's parents, the King and Queen of the Idyllist, a group of religious pacifist that left Atlantis, choosing to live in a solitary under-sea valley. King Thar was murdered by his palace guards when it was believed a madness had overcome him after he began to amass a vast military arsenal. The truth revealed after King Thar's death - the arsenal was to defend the city against his elder brother the cruel and criminally insane Prince Slizzath. The king's brother planned to possess the body of Thar's unborn offspring, escaping his netherworld imprisonment and destroy the Idyllists. Queen Berra and the Royal Council dissolved the monarchy conspiring to kill her unborn child. Unwilling to commit murder, the pacifist instead exiled the queen, who found her way back to Atlantis, where she gave birth. Born with purple eyes, a sign of the return of the ancient evil wizard Garn D'anuuth, the xenophobic Atlantians took the cursed child from his mother and left him to die outside of the city, where he was found by the exiled prince, Orin (Aquaman). As the boy grew he would join in his mentor's adventures as Aqualad. Tutored by Orin's father, the wizard Atlan, in the use of his inherited mystical abilities, the mature youth would adopt the name Tempest. |
