Origin
Six year old Stanley Dover chased his ball into a sewer drain, and found a humongous monster with large tusks.  The monster wasn't lurking, but hiding.  Chased away from practically every place in the world at one time or another during his 3,000-year existence, merely because he was scary — when in fact he found others far more fearsome than they found him.  The monster with no name (later named Spot, or due to an adolescent lisp, as Stanley put it, "Thpot") convinced Stanley he was a dog, so he could move out of the sewer into a nice, comfortable house.

Events took a turn in Stanley's innocent life when his mother was reunited with her estranged father, the senior Stanley Dover, who had spent his years abroad engaging in hedonistic and satanic activities.  While in England, Stanley senior had witnessed the imprisonment of Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams.  He attempted for years to enslave a demon or god of his own, even daring to attempt the capture of another Endless, Morpheus sister, Death - but he was never successful.

Stanley seniors' fortunes appeared to have changed when his grandson revealed his monster hiding in the closet.  The old warlock saw it as an opportunity to possess a demon and gain the power he always desired.  Sensing the old man's evil Spot disappeared, forcing Stanley's grandfather into extreme measures to ferret out the beast, including child sacrifice and possessing the recently revived but soulless Green Arrow, while Stanley was left trapped in a glass cage intended to hold the beast.  Eventually Spot did return and exercised retribution upon Stanley's grandfather for his evil deeds.
