During World War II the first Suicide Squad was formed of disaffected soldiers as ready to fight one another as they were the enemy. This changed after the squadron was put under the command of Captain Richard Montgomery Flag, who honed the team into a efficent fighting unit. By war's end, Captain Flag was promoted to a colonel and he was given command of the newly formed Task Force X. After serving in the war Colonel Flag married Karen Jace. The two had a son named Richard Rogers Flag, who would be orphaned by the age of 10. After graduating from West Point Military Academy the junior Flag became a test pilot and joined the astronaut program. While training as an astronaut, Flag fell in love with Karin Grace, a flight nurse specializing in space medicine. Flag's astronaut career came to an end when he was recruited to command a newly re-formed Suicide Squad. Under Flag's command the Suicide Squad dealt with unusual threats - from aliens to monsters to time-traveling criminals. After a final disastrous mission the Suicide Squad was disbanded and disavowed by the government. It wasn't until years later that the Suicide Squad would once again be re-formed, utilizing incarcerated super-criminals, under the command of Colonel Rick Flag. |
