after the death of his parents in a hurricane, Christopher Freeman went to live
with his maternal grandfather, while his older brother Freddy (Captain
Marvel Jr.) went to live with their paternal grandfather. A few years later the ship Freeman and his grandfather were sailing upon was attacked and sunk by a German submarine. The Nazi sub surfaced after the attack and machine gunned the remaining survivors including Freeman. The submarine was in turn destroyed by a U.S. Navy destroyer and Freeman was fished from the waters, but he soon died from blood loss. Reaching the gates of Eternity, Freeman was greeted by the wizard Shazam - who informed the youth that he had died too early. Teamed with the angelic Mr. Keeper, who serves as his mentor, Freeman was allowed to return to his mortal form but with powers to call forth the great men and women of the ages by speaking the word "Eternity!" |
