Origin
A brilliant scientist, Dr. Niles Caulder dedicated himself to searching for the secret to immortality.  When a mysterious benefactor turned out to be the international crime boss General Immortus, Caulder refused to reveal the secrets of his research.

General Immortus abducted Caulder and had a miniature bomb implanted in the scientist's body - which Immortus would deactivate when Caulder revealed the secret to immortality.  Caulder knew that the bomb was powered by the electric current of his own body and the only way to remove it was for him to die.

Confronting General Immortus Caulder was shot by the elderly criminal.  Near death, Caulder made it back to his lab where a pre-programmed robot removed the inactive bomb and restored him to life by using the immortality serum - but the damage done left him permanently crippled.

No longer able to challenge General Immortus physically, Caulder recruited a trio of misfit heroes he dubbed the Doom Patrol - who in turn referred to him as the Chief.
