Origin
Orphaned after the death of his parents in a hurricane, Freddy Freeman went to live with his fraternal grandfather, while his younger brother Christopher (Kid Eternity) went to live with their maternal grandfather.

While Freeman was fishing with his grandfather, they witnessed a strangely garbed man falling from the sky.  Unknowingly they were rescuing the villainous Captain Nazi, who had just been prevented from destroying an experimental fighter plane by Captain Marvel.

Captain Nazi killed Freeman's grandfather with a single blow and crippled the boy tossing him in the water for dead.  Spotted by Captain Marvel, Freeman was flown to a nearby hospital where the diagnosis was dire.  Captain Marvel changed back to Billy Batson and snuck Freeman from the hospital taking him before the wizard Shazam in a hopes of sparing the boy's life.

The spirit of the ancient wizard could not undue what had been done, but he could transfer some of Captain Marvel's powers to Freeman.  Transforming back into Captain Marvel, Freeman was awoke by the preceding strike of lightening causing him to call out his heroes name which brought down a second lightening bolt to transform him into Captain Marvel Jr.
