Space Adventures #33
(March, 1960) Note: Captain Atom was published in the pages of Space Adventures by Charlton Comics and only lasted for half a year before the publisher reverted the title back to its former science fiction stories. When Steve Ditko returned to Charlton after quitting Marvel in 1965 he began creating Captain Atom again, but the publisher stopped printing superhero stories in 1967, ending the character's run. Charlton's stable of characters was briefly controlled by independent publisher Americomics in the 1980's and then acquired by DC Comics. Captain Atom along with other Charlton superheroes would appear in DC continuity during the Crisis on Infinite Earths and later be published in his own series from 1987 to 1991. |

Charlton Comics Captain Nathaniel Adam was making final adjustments to an Atlas missile before its test flight, when he dropped his screwdriver. Unable to retrieve it in time he was still inside the missile when it was launched. High above the Earth the atomic warhead detonated disintegrating Adam. By unknown means Adam reconstituted his body by sheer force of will, alive but radioactive. The Cape's scientists constructed a protective suit and Adam assumed the name Captain Atom. DC Comics Cold War era Captain Nathaniel Adam was framed for treason by General Wade Eiling who offered amnesty if Adam volunteered to test a radiation protection suit called the Atom Project. The test appeared to have failed when Adam, incased in a nearly indestructible alien alloy, was apparently disintegrated by a nuclear bomb. In reality Adam survived the blast being hurled decades into the future, where General Eiling would continue to manipulate him as Captain Atom. |
