(Nov. 1966) Note: The Blue Beetle published in June 1967 by Charlton Comics only lasted for five issues before the publisher cancelled its superhero line of comics. Charlton's stable of characters was briefly controlled by independent publisher Americomics in the 1980's and then acquired by DC Comics, where Blue Beetle would see occasional reprints of poor quality. Blue Beetle along with other Charlton superheroes would appear in DC continuity during the Crisis on Infinite Earths and later be published in his own series from 1986 to 1988. |

scientist Ted Kord contacted an old college acquaintance, archaeologist
Dr. Daniel Garrett (Blue Beetle I) to investigate the apparent murder of
his uncle, Jarvis Kord, who he had been working with on a project so
secret Ted did not even know what its purpose was. Investigating, it was discovered that Jarvis had created an army of super-androids for which he intended to conquer the world. Kord recruited Dr. Garrett and they traveled to Jarvis' island hideout where Garrett used his sacred scarab to become the Blue Beetle, battling the super-androids. In the battle Jarvis was killed and Garrett mortally wounded. Realizing death was near, Garrett made Kord promise that he would carry on the legacy of the Blue Beetle. Before Kord could evacuate the hero from his uncle's underground layer it collapsed burying Garrett and his sacred scarab beneath tons of rubble. Ted Kord vowed that he would carry on the legacy of the Blue Beetle without the sacred scarab and set about training himself physically and using his technical expertise to design and build an arsenal to carry out his fight for justice as the Blue Beetle. |
