human altered by a human-enhancement chemical formula and apparently
mystical forces converting the body into a sentient plant life with
superhuman strength and durability. Man-Thing possesses neither intelligence, speech nor emotion of its own and is driven by an empathic impulse which causes great pain when assaulted by emotions of fear or anger. Inversely the Man-Thing is calm when the emotions of others around him are also calm. In defense the Man-Thing assaults the source of fear or anger causing a chemical reaction and combustion of the individual emanating the emotion. |

| Origin | |
| Research
scientist Ted Sallis working in the Florida swamps on a super-soldier serum,
like the one that created
Captain
America, was betrayed by his wife to the terrorist organization
Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.). Suspecting betrayal Sallis destroyed his notes and injected himself with the only existing sample. The serum derived from an earlier formula Sallis created to create immunity from bio-toxins caused his body to mutate. His body was eaten away and replaced by the organisms of the swamp, transforming him into a mindless muck monster known as the Man-Thing. |
