Origin
During the early part of the 20th Century, Morpheus: The Lord of Dreams was captured by the mystic Roderic Burgess.  Isolated from the Dreaming his minions Brute and Glob conspired to control the dimension.  After several failed attempts to create a new master of the dream realm the nightmares ensnared the spirit of the recently deceased Hector Hall (Silver Scarab) convincing him he was the new Dream King.

Drawing his pregnant wife Lyta into the Dreaming for companionship, Hector served for a time as the Sandman.  When Morpheus escaped his imprisonment he returned to the Dreaming; punished Brute and Glob for their disloyalty, sent Hector into the realm of the dead and returned Lyta and her son to the land of the living.  Before leaving her Morpheus said that he would one day return for her son and to keep him well.

When Daniel was kidnapped by Loki and Puck, Lyta believed that it was the work of Morpheus and that he had killed her son.  Calling upon the Eumenides (Furies of Greek legend) for revenge in her dreams she set about a chain of events that would result in the death of Morpheus and Daniel becoming the new Lord of Dreams known as the Sandman.
