As a teen, Jeremiah Arkham walked into his neighborhood corner store to find the proprietor killed by an inmate of the insane asylum run by his uncle Amadeus Arkham.  Facing certain death at the hand of a madman, the young Arkham persuaded the escaped inmate to spare his life.  Seeing a destiny in the field of psychiatrics, Arkham knew that one day he was destined to take his uncles place as the administrator of Arkham Asylum.
