Origin
Alfred Beagle chose a different path of his decedents, who served as the butlers to British aristocracy.  Instead Beagle became an espionage agent teaching others the art of disguise and infiltration.

During the height of the Cold War with the Soviet Union, Beagle was assigned a mission which earned him the everlasting enmity of the Soviets.  After his successful mission Beagle went into hiding plying the trade of his forefathers for the Wayne family of Gotham City, assuming the name Alfred Pennyworth.

After the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne, "Pennyworth" remained in the service of their young son Bruce.

When Bruce Wayne went abroad to study skills that would later serve him in his war on crime , Pennyworth stayed at Wayne Manor attending to the day to day needs of the estate.  When Wayne returned and decided to become the Batman, he confided in his butler, who would become his loyal confidant and behind the scenes aide.
